Proper business planning is essential in any business. Some companies are better than others of course; for instance, Toyota’s planning is superior to the U.S. automaker’s planning. Toyota used innovative technology and began to introduce high mileage hybrids when the cost of gasoline began to rapidly rise. This type of proper business planning will lead to greater success.
Personal planning is similar to business planning. A successful life can be experienced with proper personal planning. Planning the budget, future expenditures, and proper investments are important part of successful planning.
The U.S. happens to be engaging in a hyperinflationary path today. What this means is the Federal Reserve is loaning billions of dollars to ailing banks. This causes many economical problems such as inflation. Many believe inflation to be the rise of prices; actually it is a devaluation of money due to dilution. When Ben Bernanke gave his infamous helicopter speech it was stated that the Federal Reserve can dilute the value of a country’s money when they feel the need.
Currently we are on a hyperinflationary path but need we continue this path to the bitter end? In the early 1920’s Weimar Germany followed this path until their currency, the Mark, was completely worthless. In 1914 the Mark’s worth was about 4.2 Marks to equal one US dollar. It began falling and in 1920 it took nearly 39.5 Marks to equal one US dollar. The falling trend continued until November 1923 it took 2.4 trillion Marks to equal one US dollar.
By December of 1923 the Mark was completely worthless and was replaced. This is a prime example of a country’s currency that experienced hyperinflation to the point of worthlessness. The big question regarding hyperinflation is if it is necessary to add to the continuation of prices until it reaches infinity? No. In the late 1970’s the U.S was on an inflationary path. This could have continued with more and more currency being created; however, the attention was drawn to the rapidly raising costs. Paul Volcker, changed the path from a hyperinflationary one that the country was on.
Unfortunately we seem to have found our way to this path again 28 years later. Will we be able to stop the momentum in time or will like Weimer Germany in the 1920’s? Can we stop it and if so when and how?
Those are very good questions. Today we read about riots in Haiti over food prices that were rapidly rising. People have been killed over this already. Raising prices affect the public differently at times and sometimes hyperinflations are stopped; sometimes however, they are not.
All ships will rise with the rising tide. It is nearly impossible for home prices to rise with the prices of food, gasoline, clothes and everything else falling. My best guess right now is that the hyperinflation will continue for now and when the prices of homes begin to raise again the public will see it as a good thing.
The problems associated with hyperinflation such as riots will generally signal the end of the hyperinflation is near.

One might wonder if a new bull market surge underway will be lasting as the stock market has put on quite a performance over recent trading sessions.
Last Friday’s trading sessions on the NYSE and the NASDAQ were attention getting amazing. CitiGroup reported a huge $13 billion write down for the first quarter and that it was cutting 9,000 jobs. That was taken as good news as it might be the last of the bad news and Citi’s stock surges. What optimists the current largely untested in a bear market group of money managers are.
Google then reports that earnings for the first quarter were better than expected and the stock takes off and closes 20% higher,Google’s best one day performance in over two years. Another 4650 job cuts are announced by AT&T and this is taken as more good news as it means that AT&T is taking action in the face of a recession. For the day the Dow is up over 200 points and is closing in on Dow 13,000.
What is happening here? An investor who is looking at the stock market performance of late may draw all of the wrong conclusions. He might think that the real estate market has suddenly recovered, that the subprime mortgage fiasco is over, that the 45 trillion dollars or so of weird unmarketable derivatives sitting on the books of the world’s major financial institutions are solid AAA investments, and that the US recession will be over before we know it.
It would be easy to think all of these things based upon the stock market’s performance since Helicopter Ben and Hammering Hank Paulson engineered the Bear Sterns rescue plan and opened up the Fed overnight window to brokerage firms. Countless billions of low cost money was suddenly made available to the brokerage firms.
And therein probably is our answer to the stock market’s new life. With fresh multi billions injected into the banking and stock brokerage communities who can doubt that a significant part of it has fueled the recent stock advances? Bravo for Ben and Paul, both heroes of Wall Street.
However, at what cost? The billions of dollars that Bernanke is pouring into the financial system must come from somewhere and they do. The Fed’s high speed printing presses must be smoking hot these days.
Money is being spent by the Fed and the US government like they really have it to spend. Sadly they do not. As the world’s largest debtor nation the US is digging itself into such a deep hole with it’s borrow and spend policies that it may never fully recover.
M3, which the government stopped reporting some time ago, has been growing about 15% until recently. Currently M3 is estimated to be expanding at a rate greater than 20%. This printing of fiat currency is going to cost the US dearly over the long run. Inflation is already climbing fast as prices for energy, food, healthcare, and hard commodities soar as monetary inflation gains ground.
Make no mistake about it. A perfect financial storm is brewing and the helicopter money for everybody who is a fat cat in America tactics of Bernanke and Paulson in dumping buckets full of money on Wall Street are going to contribute to the storm’s intensity.
Once inflation really kicks in at double digit numbers, which will likely be all too soon, the Fed will have to start increasing interest rates. Raising rates in a weak economy will bring Wall Street back to earth. In the end the tricky Big Mean Bear will have his way.
Don’t forget to sell the rally. It might be your last chance to move out of stocks at attractive prices for a long while. It seems to me that this is a last gasp bull market rally before the market heads lower in a horrifying manner.

A good business model provides benefits to all of its stakeholders more effectively than existing competitors or new entrants can. Here are six common ways to provide a greater array and volume of stakeholder benefits:
1. Help your customers add customers for themselves faster than their competitors.
2. Stimulate industry growth through providing more benefits and fewer drawbacks at the current price level.
3. Reprice your offerings to encourage using more of them.
4. Reduce the resources needed to provide and use these offerings.
5. Reinvent the resources generated by your business model to provide even more benefits and fewer drawbacks in the future, faster than your competitors can.
6. Fairly share excess resources with the stakeholders who have supported and provided the business models success in a predictable way, so that no other organization can offer these stakeholders as much benefit now or in the future.
By this definition, many businesses have good business models. You can look at Disney’s theme parks, Southwest Airlines, Johnson & Johnson’s over-the-counter health-care products, and IBM’s outsourced computer services as examples.
To better appreciate what a good business model is, now let’s look at some bad business model characteristics.
The worst element of a bad business model is that scarce resources are rapidly drained from the company, harming both current and future performance. Such scarce resources include the time and attention of key employees, time to reach the market with new offerings, stakeholder goodwill, and cash.
A bad business model will usually favor some stakeholders at the obvious expense of the rest, causing cooperation to decline. The CEOs of bankrupt telecommunications companies were such a favored group at those companies that were otherwise unsuccessful in serving stakeholders.
Kmart has been an example. The company’s discount retailing business model directed its stores against Wal-Mart, but was handicapped by higher costs and prices and a voracious hunger for borrowing to increase store size and improve attractiveness.
Few of its investments helped employees, who experienced low and declining morale. Suppliers saw their sales sag and often had to wait for payment. Shareholders saw their holdings erode to nothing. Eventually, Kmart entered bankruptcy in 2001. After enormous investments and efforts, there was little to show for any stakeholder beyond customers.
Ultimately a bad business model cannot be sustained. A company with a bad business model finds itself wasting time and resources in a blind alley from which it must eventually retreat in a much diminished condition.

There are soft wares which are capable of playing on hold messages and music player on telephone. The software mixes and plays messages and music that will play to callers while they are on-hold or being transferred.
The benefits of using a computer are automation of the system like for example date sensitive messages and great user control applications. By using on hold software we get complete control over messages. Also one can have access to state of the art features that have never been available on hold before. In case a studio produces the messages then the presentation can be updated over the Internet also.
The software can be installed on any Windows machine. This connects the computer’s sound out socket to the music on hold port on the office’s phone system. The software mixes and plays messages on hold using the computer’s idle time. Another benefit is that no special hardware is needed and one can continue to use the machine as normal. If the owner has a windows machine in the office then the soft wares available in the market are most affordable way of playing on hold messages to the callers when they are on hold or being transferred among different departments.
The features of these software’s are that they are real time mixing of on hold messages and music to create an endless presentation. Also they are capable of message scheduling to commence and expire on certain dates and to play only on certain days of the week or times of day. The software’s are fully digital audio ensuring that your messages sound good, are clear and are easy to listen to.
They offer almost unlimited message and music capacity. The state of the art of fuzzy logic formula achieves the optimal message on hold rotation rate. A direct user can easily have control over messages and message time table. The software are capable of being used with professionally recorded messages sent to the user by a studio by email or by compact disc or through automatic online updates through internet.
The messages which we want to be played when caller is kept on hold can also be recorded directly on computer by plugging in a microphone. The voice can be synthesized to speech from text by use of voice synthesizer. Basically music on hold refers to the business practice of playing pre-recorded music to fill the silence that would be heard by telephone callers that have been placed on hold. Music on hold means making customers listen to music while they are kept on hold. On hold music plays an important role in the progress and profits of the company. Mainly music on hold is used in customer services. Songs played are supplied in stereo format to allow easy burning onto compact disc, but the music is mastered in mono as used on telephone answering systems.
The arrangements of music are made simple purposely and are tempting and don’t over shadow any automated voice over messages. Instruments used in music which is being played on phones are selected specifically so that they sound good to the listener. The quality of the music also depends upon the source of music that is from where it has been uploaded. Files which are pre broadband sound worse than the higher bit rate which is used these days. Some versions deliver CD quality music. Various providers provide specific sound formats which can be purchased online also. The various considerations while using the concept of music on hold are equipments and formats to be used, source of music, styles of music and benefits of using this technique. The source of music is radio, off the shelf commercial CDs, stock music on hold CDs and custom designed music on hold. The equipments used on most of music on hold systems are integrated into a businesses telephone system via an audio jack on the telephone equipment labeled music on hold. Compact disc is mostly the source of music which is digital files. Few older systems use cassette tapes which are played on tape players. Radio is another source of music.
This is very easy to play as it is just like playing a local radio station. But for this due permission has to be taken else it is considered illegal. The radio stations offer provide the desired music format but there is no control over the specific songs that are played, some of which may be unpleasant to the callers. Music on radios is not licensed for music on hold systems. Also radio broadcasters do not have right to provide any such rights as radio broadcasters themselves obtain a usage license from the music title owner for the right to broadcast said music for limited and personal use. Re broadcasting of a radio program over a phone system may likely cause licensing and copyright problems for the owner of the music on hold system. Also radio stations play commercials which can be unpleasant to the caller. Also it is possible that a competitor commercial may be played, which would be challenging.

When Gundolf Schmidt was born in 1969, his parents and older brother lived with his maternal grandmother in Germany. Until Mr. Schmidt was six that family closeness continued: His father was busy building a home in his nearby hometown, and that’s a slow process . . . but a rewarding one.
Emulating this parental example, Mr. Schmidt also built his own home after he was grown. Naturally, he got a fair amount of advice and help from his family.
That family tradition of hands-on interest in how things work has been the basis for a very successful technical career that recently led to a management position. He now serves as the engineering manager at a big Tier1 automotive supplier for a team of 31 located in Germany, the Czech Republic, and India. Throughout his explorations of learning and building, he has been blessed by having a beautiful wife who is very patient with his projects and hunger for knowledge.
This career success wasn’t completely planned. To some extent, it just happened.
After high school, Mr. Schmidt developed an interest in electronics and computers. To learn more, he enrolled in a school to prepare for work as an Informationselektroniker (which is similar to an electronic technician). Upon finishing the program, he had planned to attend the technological university. Opportunity intervened when his boss offered Mr. Schmidt an attractive job in the electronic design department of the company.
After two years, it was time for service in the German army’s signal corps where Mr. Schmidt learned a lot about communications technology. When he left the army, his employer was experiencing financial difficulties.
As a result, Mr. Schmidt took a job as a service technician for medical systems at another company. After a while, he was promoted to representative service manager. Although he was doing well, the job was wearing due to heavy travel across Germany.
Mr. Schmidt next decided he wanted to try his hand in the software environment and joined a small software systems house that was active in producing automotive applications. The company’s founder, Dr. Sammel, gave Mr. Schmidt the chance to work as a software engineer without formal qualifications.
Over the five years he was with the company, Mr. Schmidt took many courses to build his effectiveness and became quite knowledgeable about software development, programming languages, and quality assurance in software projects. He became a SPICE (ISO15504, Software Process Improvement and Capability dEtermination) assessor and an ISO 9000 internal auditor (European organization for quality — Quality Management Technician).
He also passed several training sessions in the CMM/CMMI (Capability Maturity Model / Integration) model. This education involved eight semesters of distance study while he was working that provided the equivalent of a Bachelor of Science degree.
In 2003, Mr. Schmidt joined Visteon, the former auto parts subsidiary of the Ford Motor Company. He was the software validation leader for a big automotive multimedia project developing Digital Audio Broadcast tuners for several car manufactures. In this role, he spent most of his time performing the validation process, analysis of errors, defect management and writing of software tools for automated testing, and in customer meetings.
In November 2004, Mr. Schmidt finished an important training course and qualified as an International Software Testing Qualifications Board certified tester (Foundation level). During recent years, he used his spare time to further improve his knowledge by learning some new software-languages e.g. C, C++, Java and Visual Basic and reading books about different bus-systems (e.g. CAN-BUS and so on) which are used in the automotive environment. For him, continuous improvement and learning new technologies are key factors in daily work.
Mr. Schmidt’s next foray into distance learning came in 2005 when he began a Master of Science program at Rushmore University. His goal for this education was to prepare for becoming a manager in the company. He found teaching people to be very interesting and was interested in how he could help his software group to improve its processes.
He selected Rushmore at this point in his career development because it offered distance learning, enabled him to study parallel to his daily work, and gave him the chance to earn his Master of Science degree in an acceptable amount of time. Another advantage was being able to take 12 credits in non-science courses so he could learn more about management practices while improving his English language skills. Rushmore also allowed him the freedom to take the specific courses of his own choice.
While at Rushmore, Mr. Schmidt was able to explore complex issues related to his work. For example, his American company developed software for European companies. As a result, both the CMMI and SPICE assessment models were of interest.
For one course, Mr. Schmidt mapped how CMMI translates into a SPICE perspective to help his company better understand its maturity and to save money. The result was a tool that helped improve his department’s processes.
In another course, Mr. Schmidt described powerful ways of performing software testing to be sure the new systems operate as intended. He further explored how quality staffs and software development teams can cooperate in more effective ways.
Rushmore professors also remember receiving frequent photographs from Mr. Schmidt showing progress reports while building his lovely new backyard pond as he worked on these tough courses. Obviously, the desire to build and learn is never ending for Mr. Schmidt.
Pushed by his professors, the technical work he accomplished exceeded Mr. Schmidt’s expectations. Through intensive work with Rushmore’s editing staff, Mr. Schmidt also felt that his English skills improved.
How did he feel about this distance learning experience?
“I feel proud and satisfied to have completed my M.Sc. while concurrently doing my job and building my house. I’ve learnt many valuable reading and writing techniques and also usable skills in the different environments based on my self-crafted course structure.
“The Rushmore program has provided me with what I expected: practical online learning, flexibility in terms of time, choice of courses and advisors, convenient payment options, visible progress, academic support and one-to-one mentoring.
“Maybe in the future I will start my PhD . . .”
Before graduating in 2006, Mr. Schmidt joined TRW in 2005 where he gained the position he now enjoys leading a global team of 31 as an engineering manager.
As he continues to learn and build, it’s clear that Mr. Schmidt’s best days are ahead of him.

Blinded by misleadingly reassuring memories of past successes that are buttressed by spreadsheet promises of prosperity, company leaders often grope their way into unseen danger and disaster. At best, they just waste their time and some money. Meanwhile, the company executives overlook vast, reliable paths to future success all around them.
One secret of advancing toward the ultimate competitive advantage is to do more of what works and less of what does not. And the one thing I’ve found that works most often is continual business model innovation developed through an effective process.
Such innovations almost always lower the enterprise’s needless costs for stakeholders, and, more importantly, they deliver more customer benefits at the same time.
Work on improving the performance of existing business models often does the opposite because such performance-improving plans generally call for cutting resources while attempting to keep customer benefits unchanged. In this pursuit, customer benefits usually decline due to disruptions from the change and the reduced resource level.
How does providing a successful business model innovation create multiplied benefits for all concerned? For one thing, customers like the new model better. Fewer go to a competitor. They tell their friends, which makes it easier to get more customers.
Employees enjoy their work more and aren’t as inclined to leave you. Partners see you as a source of valuable ideas that they have a hard time successfully generally for themselves. Your innovations draw their attention and support.
Suppliers gain more business and find you more open to new ideas. They bring you their best innovations first.
Shareholders like the more rapid growth in revenues and earnings. They will hold their stock and may buy more when prices dip. Potential shareholders will be intrigued and buy in also. Your stock-price multiple will rise.
You can use that stock rise to reward employees better through prior grants of lower-priced stock options, and you can also sell stock to raise capital less expensively to grow your business and to acquire other businesses. You can also sell high-priced shares to retire debt and raise cash to help you weather bad times.
The communities you serve will prosper and be proud of you. When you need cooperation for an improvement such as enhancing local public education to ensure a better workforce, citizens will seek to speed up the change process because they are in partnership with you. With each successful innovation, these connections and mutual support increase.

Managers in productions processes must know and understand the system by which raw materials they use are graded and the codes that indicate those grades. This is important from the front office all the way down to the shop floor. Engineering and project managers need to select the correct material not only for their project, but that is feasible to use within the configuration of their existing equipment capabilities. Purchasing needs to understand what they looking for in the marketplace and what, if any substitutions are allowed. First line supervisors must be aware of any special tooling requirements coming their way on pending job tickets. The following article contains information important to all levels of management for manufacturing operations that use various steels in their process.
Grading steel is an activity performed by various standardizing organizations. These standards organizations operate independently of the users who rely on these standards.
Two organizations that perform these functions are:
*Society of Automotive Engineers - SAE International (SAE)
*International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
Grading is necessary because of the different chemical compositions that go into manufacturing steel. With the various types of steel, there are a myriad of chemical combinations. Grading is also necessary because of the quality requirements for the different types of steel. With grading, a purchaser can look at what makes up a certain type of steel. He can use this grading system to choose the type of steel to meet his need.
With SAE grading, a system of letters and numbers designates grades of steel. Most of SAE’s specifications are in line with those of the American Iron and Steel Institute. This system identifies carbon and alloy steels of various specifications. Alloy steels are steels that are a combination of metals.
The SAE system identifies different types of chemical composition. Their numbering system symbolizes certain standards they have set. These standards refer to the machining, heat treating, and carburizing performance of steel. Carburizing is the addition of carbon to the surface of low-carbon steels. An SAE grading has a letter as a prefix, and then a number after the prefix.
The letter prefixes are:
B - Acid Bessemer carbon steel
C - Basic open-hearth carbon steel
E - Electric furnace steel
Basin open-hearth alloy steel does not have a prefix.
Three examples of the longer list of numbers associated with the prefixes are:
*(10XX series) Basic open-hearth and acid Bessemer carbon steel grades, non-sulfurized and non-phosphorized
*(1300 series) Manganese 1.60 to 1.90%
*(93XX series) Nickel 3.0%-chromium-molybdenum
With the ISO grading system, standards are in place as applies to the various types of steel. There are standards for applications applied to steel as well. Theirs is a numbering system, too and they constantly update their system to include new products and processes.
Here’s an example of an ISO specification:
* ISO 8504-1:2000 Preparation of steel substrates before application of paints and related products- Surface preparation methods-Part 1: General principles
The reading of this numbered document prepared by the ISO would give their standards for the above process in working with steel. There are manuals available that lay this system out in detail. ISO states that they seek to set quality standards for business, governments and society in general.
Grading systems for steels classify steel according to type. For example, there is stainless steel, galvanized steel and carbon steel. Stainless steel is further broken down into various grades of stainless steel.
ASTM International (ASTM) develops and publishes voluntary technical standards for industry. Their original name was the American Society for Testing and Materials. They have standards for structural steel used in the construction industry.
Steel standards, set by various independent organizations, ensure quality steel hits the market. These standards ensure that manufacturers know exactly what the composition is of the steel they buy. These standards also help them decide what type of steel is necessary for their project. They can choose a type of steel for a certain harsh environment based on the grading provided.
Grading systems for steels benefit producers, manufacturers, buyers, and users of steel. It is an instrumental part of any production operation that makes products using metals as a raw material.

It is not news to U.S. business people and consumers alike that America’s consumer base is changing, just as the consumer culture is as a whole. Much of the core business is in the lower to middle class population whose notable demographic population is Spanish speaking. This demographic is becoming just as wired and just as able to access the amenities that were used by upper class Americans. The use of Spanish call center services are the burgeoning star of the telecom industry.
There are two fronts of business that many U.S. companies look to these days. On one side, there is the rising population of Spanish speaking Americans, many of them recent immigrants from South America and Mexico whose first and sometimes only language is Spanish.
Another point to the business equation is finding a source for Spanish call center services. U.S. companies have sought nearby countries such as Mexico as an affordable and high quality resource for Spanish speaking professionals. In fact, Mexico is leading the world as the number one location for customer service specialists, which is around 60% market share of Spanish speaking agents in the Americas.
Mexico has perhaps the most per capita number of professional call center professionals. This may be because of such rich population sources like Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Puebla and Tijuana.
There are some roadblocks that the industry is currently trying to finding workarounds for. Land prices and pay scale are on the rise, which is putting a bit of a strain on the bottom line. But since the location is adjacent to the U.S. it really doesn’t seem to be changing as a favorite.
Caribbean Connection
This geographic area is another big business opportunity for the Spanish call center service trend. Normally a spot like Santo Domingo is a big location for tourism, but the telecom industry is on its heels. Call centers are springing rapidly in respect to all of the demand that is coming down the pipe. It’s been estimated that 2-3 billion dollar annual gains have come from the Caribbean alone.
Santo Domingo government officials even create incentives for English immersion courses so their citizens will have some job options in Spanish call center services after they gained a handle of both languages.
The Caribbean is often a lower cost of living depending on the sourced country, but on average a worker’s salary is around $650 a month. The future may hold even more promise in more Latin based cultures to bolster the U.S. private industry economy as well as helping developing nations.
Anexa Teleservices (http://www.anexatel.com/) is a telecom service company that offers the help of Spanish call center services for private businesses. Their employee training melds well with any of their client’s needs and corporate culture. The author, Art Gib, is a freelance writer.
